YOUTH AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

1st to 6th Grade

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM (1ST TO 6TH GRADE)

After School programs offers a variety of services and programs for children of all abilities and interest. Homework help is available. Programs are offered in the areas of: Health and Wellness, Academic Enrichment, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics), Performing and Creative Arts, Community Service, and Cross-Cultural Exploration.

POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORT

Southgate incorporates PBIS into our After School Program.  The purpose of the program is to improve youth behavior outcomes.  Our Staff focuses on praising youth for demostrating our four expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Ready and Be Safe.  PBIS allows youth to earn points that they can turn in on Fridays for prizes and goodies.  All staff and participants are expected to uphold the center's expectations and quidelines while at Southgate.

Kids at Hope is a strategic, cultural framework designed to engage entire communities to support success for all children, No Exceptions

Kids at Hope is based off the Three Universal Truths

1) WE Believe: Children succeed when they are surrounded by adults who believe they can succeed.

2) WE Connect: Children succeed when they have meaningful, sustainable relationship with caring adults. These relationships are defined as being an ACE.

THE KICKBACK

Southgate is teaming up with the Reston Teen Center in an exciting incentive program. Six graders who attend Southgate's after school program can earn bimonthly fieldtrips to the Reston Teen Center. Twice a month Southgate staff will reward a group of 6th grade youth that have demonstrated the center's expectations: Be Safe, Be Ready, Be Responsible and Be Respectful. These youths will begin to gain an understanding of the service continuum that will be available to them in future years.

G.I.V.E TUTORING PROGRAM (K - 6TH GRADE)

Give offers a free educational and music tutoring program every Saturday for elementary school students k-6 that need help in school.  Students will be paired with high school tutors for a year-long program.

TEEN AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

Monday - Friday 
2:30 - 6:00 p.m.

Teen activities consist of homework assistance as well as a variety of recreation and enrichment activities (sport and fitness, nutrition, cooking projects, arts & craft, multicultural activities, life education skills and field trips.  Meal provide daily for all those participanting in activities at the center.

Technology Projects

Make your ideas come alive at the Clubhouse Network. Hang out with friends, work on projects together and use exciting new technology (Movie Making, Music, Robotics, STEM projects, 3D Printing). The Clubhouse Network provides a creative and safe learning environment where young people work with adult mentors to explore their own ideas, develop skills, and build confidence in themselves through the use of technology.

VEX ROBOTICS (5TH - 12TH GRADERS)

Monday
6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Identify the problem, brainstorm ideas, design your idea, build your Robot, program your Robot, test and evaluate, redesign, share your solutions, practice driving and enter an amazing competition.

Digital Art Workshop

DIGITAL ART WORKSHOP

Wednesday
6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Intro to Adobe Illustrator, creating vectors, intro to Adobe Effects, creating simple animations, creating story, characters, and making animation with a story.

Through our Community Development, we have the potential to make a real and positive change in the community. This is one of our key areas of focus here at Cathy Hudgins Community Center at Southgate, and a source of much success for our Nonprofit Organization. COED TEENS INTERMURAL SPORTS

Soccer, Basketball, Flag Football, and Volleyball

Southgate has just the league for you. Our tournaments are held during the school year and we play against other community centers in Fairfax County.
